Things about me
Hello. I’m Rachel. I make jewellery. Lots of different kinds of jewellery. I’m addicted to making things, of all kinds – I have a shop at folksy.com and one at etsy.com .
A wee while back, I completed a year’s Arts Practice programme, which was great for lots of reasons. Now, a couple of months after finishing it, I realised the most useful thing I learnt is what I DON’T want to do; what I DON’T want to be.
I want to have fun, and that didn’t seem to be an option. That’s why I started doing this, because I enjoy it. I want to have fun trying things out – new materials, new techniques, new styles. I don’t want to be pigeonholed and bulldozed and bottlenecked and all those other odd metaphors. If that means I don’t fit in with the conventional, accepted, universal ‘norms’ of what a designer should do, then so be it. I make what I make because I enjoy making it, and I don’t intend to do the exact things that stop me enjoying it. SO RAAARRR!! ;)
One of the things the tutors scoffed about was that I said I wanted the majority of my sales to come via websites – I thought, “Hang on, I’m a mother of two, working part-time as it is; if that’s the most time-effective way to make MY practice work, then that’s how it’ll work. So nurks.” It got me really angry…. and for various reasons it’s taken a while for me to get going with things, but now I’m on my way.
I also sing – me and my genius guitarist friend Ian are collectively known as Rachel & The Lawn Grower. Look for us on Facebook - here we are
I hope you like my designs, I do. If you’d like to contact me about anything I ramble on about herein, please do, I’m friendly; and if you bring me cake, I won’t even bite you.
Love and things,
Rachel.

Your tutors scoffed at the power of the internet for selling stuff ???!!! Where they luddites? They don’t sound too savvy to me. Maybe they’ve been hanging out in the dark corner of the teachers common room ever since 70′s macrame. Drinking birds Instant coffee.
I know right!?!? I mean, I haven’t exactly set the world alight with my sales (yet!!) but it was more about the attitude of “you are a designer therefore you must do X, Y and Z and not deviate from said path you weirdo” kinda thing… I mean, being creative is about…..well, being creative, surely? Also, having a busy life where it’s necessary to work to support your family, leaving you a lot less time to be schlepping round potential outlets leaves us with few other options!! Made me very cross….but hey, at least I learnt something!
Thanks for your comment
